Home Coffee Roasting Part 2: Home Coffee Roasting Devices (RR34)

Home Coffee Roasters Discussed in this Episode

1. Nesco CR1010 Professional

The Nesco CR1010 Professional is an inexpensive, small coffee roaster with a limited capacity.  However, it produces a nice, consistent roast and has some great features like a smoke reduction system and an auger screw system inside the roasting chamber.  This is a great inexpensive option for someone looking to get their feet wet with home roasting.

2. The Fresh Roast SR 500

The Fresh Roast SR 500 is another great affordable and small home coffee roaster.  Like the Nesco, this roaster is a hot air roaster.  There are some important differences between the Fresh Roast and the Nesco so do your homework before deciding between them.

3. Behmor 1600 Plus

The Behmor 1600 Plus is an excellent and popular home coffee roaster with some amazing features: large capacity (allows for roasts up to 16oz), smoke reduction system, and customizable and programable roast profiles.  The Behmor struggles to produce dark roasts so that is something to keep in mind if you prefer darker roasted coffee.

4. Gene Cafe Roaster

The Gene Cafe Roaster is the home coffee roaster that I have used for about 2 years now.  This roaster has a beautiful design with an off-axis glass roasting chamber that produces a consistent, well roasted and delicious coffee every time.  The capacity is a bit smaller than the Behmor (about 8oz) and at $625 the Gene Cafe is not exactly cheap.  Both the Behmor 1600 Plus and the Gene Cafe are excellent choices if you’re really interested in getting serious about your home coffee roasting.

5. Hottop Home Coffee Roaster

The Hottop Home Coffee Roaster is the big daddy of home coffee roasting devices.  Hottop offers two models (basic and plus) which are the most expensive home coffee roasters on the market, priced at $1,100 and $1,600 respectfully.  However, this price definitely buys you a lot of features.  The Hottop models include features that are common on professional, commercial coffee roasters such as an external cooling tray, ability to measure coffee bean temperature, and many customizable features.
